Who Uses Maryland Relay:
Speech Disabled

QUESTION: How can a person with a speech disability communicate over the telephone?

ANSWER: There are two calling options for persons with speech disabilities:

For a mild to moderate speech disability.
Speech-to-Speech:
This service allows a person whose speech may be difficult to understand to communicate over the telephone with the help of a specially trained operator. No special telephone is needed for this calling option. More information about STS.

For a more severe speech disability.
Hearing Carry-Over (HCO):
This feature allows a person who may have very limited speech capabilities but who can hear, and may require use of a special phone equipment to communicate over the phone. More information about HCO.

Specialized telephone equipment.

Setting up a Customer Profile is strongly encouraged with HCO users.

Instructions for enabling captions in Windows Media Player

Windows Media Player Version 10 & 11

To enable captions in the Windows Media Player Version 10 & 11 menu, you may have to set the following:

Play → Captions and Subtitles → On if Available

1. From the Windows Media player menu, choose Play
2. Choose the Captions and Subtitles menu
3. Select On if Available

Tools → Options → Security → Show local captions when present

1, From the Windows Media player menu, choose Tools
2. Select Options
3. Select Security tab
4. Make sure the Show local captions when present is "checked"

Windows Media Player Version 9

To enable captions in the Windows Media Player (Version 9) menu:

Play → Captions and Subtitles → On if Available

1. From the Windows Media player menu, choose Play
2. Choose the Captions and Subtitles menu
3. Select On if Available

Windows Media Player Version 7 & 8

To enable captions in the Windows Media Player (Version 7 & 8) menu:

View → Now Playing Tools → Captions

1. From the Windows Media player menu, choose View
2. Choose the Now Playing Tools menu (includes Equalizer, Captions, Visualizations)
3. Select Captions. (Make sure Show Equalizer and Settings is also selected)
